The 6th Edition of the FIFA/CIES/NMMU Certificate in Sport Management programme got underway on 1 October 2012. At the opening ceremony for this edition, 29 new students (the largest group to date) from across South and southern Africa were officially welcomed by Prof Rosa du Randt (Head of Department for Human Movement Science) and Mr Vincent Monnier (Senior Manager for International Relations at the CIES).

This year’s group includes 10 students that come from numerous regions of southern Africa, including Rwanda, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Namibia and Nigeria. The South African contingent is made up of students from the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Gauteng.

The students represent sport in a diverse range of capacities such as sport development officers for the government and NGO sectors, own business sector, sport managers for local, regional and national sport federations, sport directors at high performance sport centres, football club managers, sport journalists and educators.

The students also represent a wide range of sports such as triathlon, soccer, tennis, volleyball, netball, basketball, weightlifting and swimming.

The week of lectures got off with a bang with internationally renowned security expert Rory Steyn delivering a keynote address on safety and security measures for major sport events whilst Dr John Burger and Vernon Oosthuizen presented the strategic management and marketing modules.
